i just seen him laying there. i knew he was dead. 25-year old jose escobar was shot and killed after a fight near a fast food stand at 35th and morgan. his friend was left paralyzed. escobar's family says he was a gang member...but, was trying to get out. right now, in chicago - the epidemic of violence is spreading all over the place. tio hardiman is with ceasefire. in the last few months -- under a grant from the city...the group started working with police in two neighborhoods. hardiman says slowing the city's homicide rate will take changes in policing strategies and community strategies. no one - he says- is off the hook. this is giving us a black eye across the nation. we've reached the 400 mark and we're on pace to hit 500 homicides for the first time in several years. the mayor can only do so much..police can only do so much. we all have to play a role. stop the violence.

on the southside -- members of sweet holy spirit church were on a prayer walk, today. prompted by recent shootings... including the murder of dejuan jackson -- 17 and, police say the gunman -- is just 14 years old. many are wearing red symbolic of the bloodshed and the blood of jesus that covers us all. we want to pray on every corner that crime will cease in this area. homicides are up 25% from this time last year. the state is going to take leaders to get involved in getting people to put down the guns. >> a man accused of abducting another man from his home in streamwood is being held on 325

thousand dollars bond. keewon taylor of streamwood is charged with armed robbery aggravated vehiclular hijacking, and home invasion. taylor is accused abducting a 30-year-old man from a home on lynwood court friday morning. the victim says he was forced into his car at gunpoint.. but he intentionally crashed the vehicle and was able to get away. taylor turned himself in at the cook county courthouse in maywood friday night. hundreds of people gathered on the south side to demand more construction jobs for african americans in chicago. the rally in the beverly neighborhood was organized by retired businessman, ed gardner. he says the high rate of violence among blacks is due to lack of jobs and business opportunites. protesters gathered at a construction site where they claim, no african americans are working.

service was in memory of active and retired firefighters and paramedics who died in the line of duty or passed away in the last 12 months >> the first presidential debate takes place this wednesday night. both candidates have been off the campaign trail this weekend, doing their homework as they get ready for the big night in denver. cristina mutchler has more. the clock is ticking down to wednesday's presidential debate with president obama and mitt romney getting ready to go head-to-head for the first time and their supporters weighing in on who is best prepared. i think both are excellent in their own way. i think you could argue that mitt has had a lot more recent experience, obviously, but also, candy part of it depends on who is moderating. he's been through at least 20 debates in the course of the primaries, and newt gingrich himself said just the other day, he's the best debater. he beat all of them. tim

interviewed by police about the run-in. the u-s supreme court begins its new term tomorrow. today, six of the nine supreme court justices attended the annual "red mass" at the cathedral of saint matthew the apostle in washington. the mass aims to bring people together to pray for members of the judiciary before the court begins hearing cases each year. among the big issues before the supreme court this term: affirmative action, same sex marriage, and voting rights. the death toll for u-s troops in afghanistan has now reached two thousand. the milestone was reached last night - during a possible insider's attack at a checkpoint in the wardak province. five people were killed including one u-s soldier. u-s forces have been fighting in afghanistan for the last eleven years. a program to train afghan soldiers and police officers has been under way for several years.. in anticipation of all foreign troops leaving afghanistan by 2014. but this year, more than 50

there was a lot of activity atop the willis tower early this morning ... and it caused some tv viewers to lose reception. a helicopter delivered a new antenna for wls-tv. while the work was going on at the top of the 110 story building, other stations that use the tower had to turn off their signals. that included wgn. for several hours, viewers who use tv antennas had no reception. cable viewers were not affected. stations were back on the air before 10:30. traffic is about to get a lot more challenging for commuters who use michigan avenue to get onto lake shore drive. the on-ramp at michigan avenue and oak street will be closed

for about six weeks, starting tomorrow. construction crews will be working to repair the viaduct and retaining walls of the northbound ramp. c-dot says the structure is badly in need of repair, and they want to get it done before the winter cycle of freezing and thawing. traffic will be re-routed along inner lake shore drive to the la salle entrance. the southbound exit at michigan and oak will not be affected. drivers in los angeles know what chicago motorists are about to face. crews are wrapping up work on "carmageddon-two", a ten-mile stretch of the "four-oh-five" freeway, shut down for the weekend in a billion dollar widening project. workers got a shock when a huge chunk of concrete fell from a bridge that was being widened for the project. last year's "carmageddon- part one" shut down the same stretch of road. the work is going as scheduled and the highway is expected to open in time for the morning
